Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
