The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
