Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
